چکیده

Using Yohkoh SXT and Nobeyama 17 GHz data, we have studied the soft X{ray and microwave emission above several stable, large sunspots near central meridian passage. Our study connrms the well known fact that soft X{ray emission is depressed above sunspots. It also shows that the distribution of their soft X{ray intensity is not uniform; usually the darkest pixels are associated with the umbra or the far edges of the leading part of the penumbra while the following part of the penumbra may contain higher intensity pixels associated with brighter loops. For the rst time, we present a systematic survey of the temperatures and emission measures of the soft X{ray material above sunspots. Sunspots always contain the lowest temperatures and emission measures in the active regions. The mean umbral temperature is 1:8 10 6 K and the mean penumbral temperature is 2:4 10 6 K. The mean umbral and penumbral emission measures are log EM = 26:60 cm ?5 and log EM = 27:00 cm ?5 , respectively. The diierences between the umbral and penumbral plasma temperatures are physically signiicant. The higher penumbral values imply that the loops associated with the penumbrae are generally hotter and denser than the loops associated with the umbrae. The highest sunspot temperatures and emission measures are still lower than the average active region parameters but higher than the quiet Sun plasma parameters. The coronal radiative energy loss rate above the umbrae is 15% higher than the radiative loss rate of the quiet Sun plasma but a factor of 8.3 lower than the typical active region radiative loss rate. The radio emission comes from the gyroresonance mechanism and as expected, it is sensitive to the magnetic eld rather than the soft X{ray emitting plasma.

Fast Time Structure During Transient Microwave Brightenings: Evidence for Nonthermal Processes

Transient microwave brightenings (TMBs) are small-scale energy releases from the periphery of sunspot umbrae, with a flux density two orders of magnitude smaller than that from a typical flare. Gopalswamy et al (1994) first reported the detection of the TMBs and it was pointed out that the radio emission implied a region of very high magnetic field so that the emission mechanism has to be gyror...

Radio Versus EUV/X{Ray Observations of the Solar Atmosphere

This paper 1 reviews the contrasting properties of radio and EUV/X{ray observations for the study of the solar atmosphere. The emphasis is placed on explaining the nature of radio observations to an EUV/X{ray audience. Radio emission is produced by mechanisms which are well-understood within classical physics. Bremsstrahlung tends to be dominant at low frequencies, while gyroresonance emission ...

Coronal Magnetic Field Measurements through Gyroresonance Emission

This article reviews the use of gyroresonance emission at radio wavelengths to measure coronal magnetic fields. The spiralling motion of electrons in the 200– 2000 G fields in the solar corona produces sufficient opacity to render the corona optically thick, making it easy to recognize such sources in microwave images from their coronal brightness temperatures. Where gyroresonance sources are p...

Radio Measurements of Coronal Magnetic Fields

The measurement of magnetic field strengths in the solar corona using radio observations is reviewed. This is a well established technique that exploits the fact that the electron gyrofrequency for typical coronal magnetic field strengths (100–2000 Gauss) lies in the radio frequency range. Opacity from the resulting gyroresonance emission from hot plasma above active regions allows the direct m...

The Radio : X-ray Correlation in Cygnus X-3 and Other Galactic Microquasars

Cygnus X-3, a Galactic X-ray binary, shows the presence of outflows in the form of radio jets. The SED in the X-ray band shows a complicated structure and evolution. We review some recent results of the long-term correlation of the radio and X-ray emissions, chiefly in the low (hard) states of the source. Comparing the results with those of other Galactic microquasars, we attempt to provide a c...
